PCT - Barlow Pass

Today Zoe and I hiked from Barlow Pass to Timberline Lodge along the Pacific Crest Trail. It was amazing. The trail is through old growth forest for the first 3 1/2 miles, then you start to get above tree line and the views are incredible. It's a view of Mt. Hood that you don't get to see when you simply drive to the lodge. Above treeline the trail is mostly sand, so the going is slow at the top, but well worth the effort.

Zoe kept stopping in the shade, and while in one stand of short white bark pines, a bunch of birds landed in the trees. I'm not sure why they got so close, maybe they were curious? Maybe they were expecting a handout? Anyway, it was pretty cool. I've never had birds get so close. Well, except for pigeons...

We saw a couple of "real" hikers. A couple of guys with huge packs, and one guy who must have been through-hiking, because he looked like he'd been outdoors for a LONG time. That and he smelled like he was ho
meless. He gave a friendly hello and patted Zoe on the head and kept on going.

Distance: 9.5 miles
Total ascent: 2100'
Time: 4hr 45min
