The day started with me knowing this was going to be my last day. I just wanted to enjoy it as much as possible. It was difficult as one of the first things we saw on the highway out of town was a deer that was hit by a car, laying partially in the road, bleeding and with broken legs, looking up at us as we passed her by. She was dying slowly and my heart broke. I cried for her, and prayed she died quickly and painlessly. It was a sight I still cannot get out of my mind.
I rode hard for a bit trying to get past the tradgedy I just witnessed but the crosswinds and headwinds were picking up. Will they never end? I knew I just had to hang in there until the lunch stop where I had already made plans to get in the van for a ride back to the motel.
At lunch the flies were swarming like mad and everyone made their best effort to shoo them away. I got in Lon's van with Katie and we had a good time talking and laughing. At the next stop we were joined by Rebecca, Christopher and Susan and had even more fun. We had the whole van laughing hysterically!
At the motel I quickly packed my bike and went to the pool with Katie for more "girl time". It was a welcome relief after all the bike/saddle-time talk during the last two weeks. After Doug showed up we showered and all went next door to the Big Texan restaurant where we witnessed someone eat a 72oz steak in less than an hour. YUCK! And yet totally fascinating. I had a buffalo burger which was SO good, and we ordered two huge pieces of chocolate cake which were split between eight of us.
After a few hours of sleep, my taxi arrived promptly at 4:00am and I was on my way home. I will miss everyone so much and am sad to leave.
